IU 172: New Student Seminar

New Student Seminars are 1 credit, 8 week courses available to new students to assist them with their transition to CSU.  Each New Student Seminar course includes an Instructor and an upper-class Peer Facilitator who will assist new students with making connections as part of their new student experience.

Fall 2019 Seminars (Beginning Week of August 26th):

New Student Seminar: Exploring Major Tracks (For Undeclared/Exploring Students)

In this course, new first-year students will learn about academic and career options within the various major tracks at CSU. Experiential opportunities will allow students to explore academic options in determining how students’ interests and abilities fit with these options. Students will also be introduced to exploring their professional and educational goals and the achievement of these goals for their success at CSU, and begin to develop a network within the CSU community.

New Student Seminar: Transfer Student Success

In this this course, new transfer students will learn about creating a successful transition to CSU. Through self-awareness, reflection, and planning, students will explore different aspects of the transition to a new institution including academic success as well as personal and professional goal setting. Through these opportunities, students will be exposed to planning for their success at CSU and beyond. This course will provide a support network for new transfer students to aid in building their community to enrich the first semester transition. Class sections will meet twice a week for the first eight weeks of the fall semester for 50 minutes each class period.

New Student Seminar: International Student Success

In this course, new international students will learn about creating a successful transition to CSU.  Students will explore different aspects of the cross-cultural transition to the U.S., Fort Collins, and CSU and learn how that experience is best navigated. Students will also engage in discussion, planning and goal-setting in regards to immigration benefits, academic success and social systems to ensure their success at CSU and beyond.  This course will provide a support network for new international students to aid in building their community and sense of belonging to enrich their first semester transition.  Class sections will meet twice a week for the first eight weeks of the fall semester for 50 minutes each class period.
