What does a Ram Welcome Leader do?
Ram Welcome Leaders are the primary mentors and role models who lead new students (and parents and guests) through the fall Ram Welcome experience.  Each Ram Welcome Leader is paired with a residence hall floor (or with international or first-year students living off-campus) and serves as a resource and guide by ensuring students are attending Ram Welcome events, as well as facilitating small group discussions formally and informally regarding the Ram Welcome program and the transition to Colorado State University.  For a full list of position responsibilities view the position description page.

What is the difference between a Ram Welcome Leader and an Orientation Leader?
Orientation Leaders work our summer orientation programs for new students (and parents and guests).  Orientation Leaders are hired during the fall semester, trained throughout the spring semester, work throughout the summer and reside in the residence halls during the summer employment period.  During fall Ram Welcome, Orientation Leaders serve as supervisors for small groups of Ram Welcome Leaders. Ram Welcome Leaders ONLY work the Ram Welcome program.

What are the specific days and times I will be working during Ram Welcome?
Due to the fact that Ram Welcome Leaders are assigned specific shifts during Ram Welcome and have the opportunity to sign up for various shifts/activities events to work, we ask that applicants hold full days during Ram Welcome (August 12-18, 2024). Please visit the time commitments for complete details.

How are Ram Welcome Leaders compensated?
We are looking for applicants who have a sincere interest in the position for the experience and to give back to the Colorado State University community and serve new students, thus, the Ram Welcome Leader position is a volunteer experience.

Do I have to work during the summer?
There is NO summer work as a Ram Welcome Leader until Fall Ram Welcome Leader Training.  However, Ram Welcome Leaders are asked to be available via e-mail over the summer as that is when updates, training information, etc. are sent out by Orientation and Transition Programs.

Do I have to live on campus?
Ram Welcome Leaders DO NOT live on campus during the time they are employed as Ram Welcome Leaders.  However, if you are moving into the residence halls again in the fall, please indicate that on your application as we will coordinate an early move-in process/date for you with Residence Life prior to the start of Ram Welcome Leader Training.

If I applied to be a Resident Assistant (R.A.) or other position within University Housing but do not know if I have received the position yet, can I still apply to be a Ram Welcome Leader?
Yes, you can apply for both positions and stay in the R.A. process and the Ram Welcome Leader process. However, in the case of receiving an offer from the R.A. position, you must inform Orientation and Transition Programs immediately as you are not able to hold both positions in the fall.

If you have any questions, contact otp_ram_welcome@colostate.edu.

What former Ram Welcome Leaders say about the experience:

CSU Community & Belonging:

  • “My experience this year as a Ram Welcome Leader has allowed me to gain even more CSU pride than I had before. I learned a lot of new facts and traditions about our university I did not know of before. It was really great to see so many Ram Welcome Leaders with such strong CSU pride and respect.”

  • “Through serving as a Ram Welcome Leader I gained friends, a sense of leadership, a stretched comfort zone and memories that have made my CSU experience better than ever.  I can honestly say Ram Welcome was the best weekend of college at CSU for me.”

  • As a Ram Welcome Leader I gained a sense of urgency and passion to make the most of my CSU experience and by that I mean that Ram Welcome inspired me to continue pursuing relationships with everyone; people in my classes, people I see walking around campus, anybody! It has completely changed the way I walk around this campus; instead of just going from class to class, I am looking for opportunities to build relationships and lead when I can.”

  • “By being a Ram Welcome Leader, I gained a deeper insight into what CSU stands for and what the students of CSU value.”

  • “Through being a Ram Welcome Leader, I gained a new sense of pride in being part of the CSU community.  Before this, I took pride in being a CSU student, but after this experience, it made me realize that there is so much more to CSU.”

  • “I gained a strong sense of Ram pride through the Ram Welcome experience.  At the University Welcome, I felt so proud to initiate the cheers and get the new students standing up and cheering along with me. I have never so much a part of CSU as I did (and have ever since the University Welcome).”

  • “I gained more friendships and relationships with freshmen and other Ram Welcome Leaders through the Ram Welcome Leader experience. Ram Welcome really is like a reinforcement of why I love CSU and I continue to come here. i love what we have to offer and all of the staff that really devote so much of their time and energy into making sure the students are having the experience that is the best possible.”

  • “I got reconnected with my campus and made new bonds with many of my peers as a Ram Welcome Leader. It reminded me why I love this school and gave me the opportunity to show others how it can be a wonderful place for them too.”

Leadership & Professional Development:

  • “I have been in leadership programs for the past ten years, and I can quite honestly say that Ram Welcome made me realize I still had so much room to improve. Ram Welcome made me a more confident leader, by pushing me out of my comfort zone, and leaving me working with of a group of students.”

  • “I have to say that my leadership ability is easily 100 times better now than it was before. Being able to lead group meetings in such an important program helped me stop questioning my own authority and get over inhibitions I had about being in a leadership role. I find it so easy to simply go up to students – even in groups – and just begin talking to them, and that is no doubt because of Ram Welcome.”

  • I feel like  I just gained an abundance of things from Ram Welcome Leader experience. I never thought going into the position I would have grown as much as I did. Leadership skills, new friends, new connections, an established connection to CSU, a school pride I had not experienced before.”

  • “I really do feel way more connected to the CSU community through meeting the incoming students, working with my fellow ram welcome leaders, and working with other people behind the scenes. I loved being able to attend the green out welcome speech. It really did instill me with hope or the next year that I’m here. I think that was a great idea!”

  • “I think something I gained from this experience that I will forever appreciate is confidence. I feel I know have more confidence in my ability to be a leader to new students and my peers. I also have more confidence in CSU as an institution and all the great opportunities there are. This helps give me the motivation to get even more involved on campus and encourage others to do the same.”

  • “Through the bonds with other students involved in RW I made amazing new friends that I already had a ton in common with. It was really refreshing meeting over 100 people in one day and realizing there was potential a great friendship with each of them. This helped enhance leadership and so did facilitating activities with our halls. I learned so much about how to work as a leader with the students in my hall, they were a ton of fun and i loved working with them. I enjoyed being a mentor, tour guide, question answerer, and a consistent connection between them and the university.”

  • “It was exactly what i need as a senior to get excited about my year to come. I was kind of hesitant on how this semester was going to go for me. After ram welcome I have more desire to get involved in more areas within this last year that i am here!”
